Hester Salomina (Salóme) Hendrikse (néé Oosthuizen) was born on 31 August 1942 in Malmesbury (Cape Province) where her father, Kosie Oosthuizen was a pastor of the Dutch Reform church in Malmesbury. Her father died when she was 9 months old.
She went to school at various towns eg the Primary School at Schweizer – Reneke (till grade 6) and there after she went to school (from Grade 7 onwards till matric) at La Rochelle Girls’ High School in Paarl.
In 1960 Salóme registered for the B.Mus degree at the University of Stellenbosch (US) with piano as main practical instrument and solo singing as a 2nd main instrument. In 1963 she graduated at US.
Salóme started with a teaching career in 1964. (She was mostly involved with choral singing, school music and music as a subject up to matric)
